How to Find the Right Mindset or Life Coach for You
JC
As we head into 2025, I’ve been reflecting on my own journey as a coach—and one truth that always stands out is this: Coaches have coaches. We’re just as committed to our growth as we encourage our clients to be, and finding the right coach can be as much of a journey for us as it is for anyone else.
Recently, as I began searching for a new coach to support me in this next chapter of my life, I realized how tricky it can be to find the perfect fit. So, if you’re on the hunt for a mindset or life coach, I wanted to share some things I’ve learned along the way that can help you find someone who truly aligns with you and your goals.
1. Get Clear on What You’re Looking For
Before you start your search, spend some time reflecting.
- What do you want to focus on? Is it confidence? Career growth? Healing old patterns?
- What kind of support feels right? Do you need someone who will push you, or do you thrive with a gentler, more reflective approach?
Clarity will help you narrow down your options and make it easier to recognize the right coach when you find them.
2. Do Your Research
There are so many incredible coaches out there, but not all of them will be a match for you—and that’s okay!
- Check out websites, Instagram profiles, and directories like the International Coaching Federation.
- Read through testimonials, blog posts, or videos. The right coach will speak in a way that resonates with you and your goals.
3. Focus on Connection Over Credentials
Certifications and experience are important, but the magic of coaching lies in the connection. You want someone who feels like a good fit energetically—someone you feel comfortable opening up to and inspired by.
Personally, I gravitate toward coaches who are authentic and approachable, who balance accountability with compassion. What qualities are non-negotiable for you?
4. Schedule a Discovery Call
Most coaches offer a free consultation call so you can get a feel for their vibe and approach. Use this time to ask questions like:
- What’s your coaching style?
- How do you help clients navigate challenges?
- Can you share an example of someone you’ve worked with on similar goals?
Pay attention to how you feel during the conversation. Do you feel seen? Heard? Excited? Trust your gut—it rarely steers you wrong.

5. Remember, This Is a Partnership
The best coaching relationships are collaborative. Your coach isn’t there to “fix” you—they’re there to empower you, guide you, and hold you accountable to your vision.
It’s okay if it takes a few tries to find the right fit. Just like dating, the process is about finding someone whose energy and expertise match your needs and personality.
6. Start Small
If committing to a long-term program feels overwhelming, see if your potential coach offers single sessions or a shorter-term program. This can be a great way to test the waters and see if their approach clicks with you.
7. Coaches Have Coaches
It’s worth mentioning again because it’s so important—coaches have coaches! I believe in this work so deeply that I regularly invest in coaching for myself. It’s a reminder that we’re all on a journey, and no matter how much we’ve learned, there’s always room to grow.
Why This Matters
Working with the right coach can be a game-changer. They’ll hold space for you to explore your potential, help you uncover new perspectives, and guide you toward action steps that align with your goals.
As I continue my own search for a coach to support me in 2025, I’m keeping these same tips in mind. It’s a reminder that this process isn’t about finding someone perfect—it’s about finding someone perfect for you.
